PARAPHRASE:

The man who [in this house] habitually pronounced what he
wanted to have accepted as truth, questioned, however, in
his own mind, how much he really understood. He went
over and over arguments in his head and, as he came to the
end of his life, realized that his admission to Heaven
[most righteous due] was not something he could obtain
simply by self-serving prayer, but had to be achieved by
right living."
