Berlin Airlift Skytrain

The reason for the official name for the Berlin Airlift, "Operation Skytrain," is suggested by this photograph of C-47 transport airplanes unloading at Tempelhof Air Base. The airlift began on June 24, 1948 when the Soviet Union cut off all ground traffic to West Berlin. Generally considered the greatest humanitarian airlift of all time, the Berlin Airlift continued for 15 months. At its height an airplane took off or landed in West Berlin, around the clock, every 90 seconds. This photograph is part of a public relations program submitted to a Public Relations Society of America competition by the Military Air Transport Service. MATS supplied most of the American planes used in the airlift. The PRSA records are available for research at the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives. |
