Berlin Airlift Coal Shipment

A British soldier directs the truck driver as German workers prepare to load a shipment of coal on a U.S. Air Force C-54 airplane at Fassberg Airfield. From there the coal will be transported to West Berlin. Coal represented 65% of all of the material airlifted to West Berlin. The large C-54s, the military equivalent of DC-4s, were capable of carrying ten tons, and they transported a majority of the goods airlifted to Berlin. The successful conclusion of the airlift represented the first successful challenge of the West to Soviet Cold War expansion. This photograph was part of a public relations program submitted to a PRSA competition by the Military Air Transport Service. MATS supplied much of the aircraft used during the Berlin Airlift. |
