Apollo 13 Patch

Apollo 13 Patch | Historical Object | Wisconsin Historical Society
Mission patch design for Apollo 13. This patch was worn by Commander James A. Lovell, Jr., formerly of Milwaukee; John L. Swigert, Jr.; and Fred W Haise, Jr. Apollo 13 was launched on April 11, 1970, but terminated shortly after because of a nearly disastrous failure in the service module oxygen tank. Although Apollo 13 might be considered a failure, the return flight, which was televised to a worried nation, made the three astronauts into national heroes. More recently, the mission was made into a motion picture in which Tom Hanks portrayed Lovell. The Apollo decals from which this image was made were collected by ABC science reporter, Jules Bergman.
