Borden Delivery Truck and Driver

Elwin "Al" Smith stands in front of his Borden's delivery truck on his last day before retirement. A University of Wisconsin dormitory and a parking lot are in the background. Elwin was born August 9, 1924 in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Russell Smith and Ethel Taylor. On September 8, 1945 he married Mary Catherine Clemens (1923-1989). At the time he was employed by Winnebago Auto Replacement. On September 3, 1952 he began working for Borden's Dairy. In the late 1970s home milk delivery ceased, so Elwin drove a semi-truck for Borden's until his retirement on October 1, 1982. At the time of his retirement he was making $9.25/hour and his average earnings for the past five years had been $20,362.19. After retirement he drove a school bus and delivered Owl's Nest cheese out of Poynette. His last job was working as a janitor for Suttle Press. Elwin died on June 7, 2002 in Madison. |
