Mitchell Airport

Control tower and entrance to the new Howell Street passenger terminal at General Mitchell Field shortly before its formal opening in July 1955. The Milwaukee airport, originally known as Milwaukee County Airport, was renamed in 1941 to honor General Billy Mitchell who grew up in Milwaukee. In 1955, the year in which this photograph was taken, Mitchell Field handled an estimated 500,000 passengers. In 1986, the airport was renamed General Mitchell International Airport. |
