From Jim Allen: "Scout pickup concept with bed tonneau, ca 1959. When this rendering was made by IH stylist Krippendorf on October 22, 1959, the body designs had switched from being based on a Royalite construction material to steel. The original intent for the Scout was to be a compact pickup but Ralph M. Buzard, the VP of the Motor Truck Division, pointed out that delivery vehicles with valuable cargo needed a way to be secured. The Design department came up with this fiberglass tonneau concept but in short order, a station wagon style unit was deemed a better idea and the Travel-Top, full length top was the result. This idea wear the name "Scouter" rather than "Scout" because the trademark right to "Scout" had not been acquired at this point." |
