Boy Standing at Gate
Hand-colored portrait of a boy standing in the arch of a decorative iron gate holding the door open with his right hand and holding a hand fan and handkerchief in his left hand. In the background is a painted backdrop of trees near a body of water. The boy appears to be wearing a uniform similar to that described by Carrie in her journal from Japan and South Korea which is worn by the boys who serve at temples. She describes the uniforms as "trousers, and worn above those a smock which has a collar fastened by a pin." |
