Workers Harvesting in Rice Field

Workers Harvesting in Rice Field | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
In her journal from China, Carrie Chapman Catt describes the rice plantations. All of the workers and their families lived on the compound and worked long hours for low wages, "bent over and trudging through the mud." Most workers were women who were widowed or never married, some with children. Men without other marketable skills also worked at these plantations. She notes that despite the hard work and restrictive lifestyle, most seemed happy. This hand-colored lantern slide shows workers, primarily women, gathering rice.
