International Harvester Tractor in Field

International Harvester Tractor in Field | Magazine or Periodical | Wisconsin Historical Society
A man is driving a tractor in a farm field in Australia. Expansive farm fields are seen in the background. Original caption reads: "For the conservation of soil resources . . . Wider practice of conversation farming is necessary if the farmer is to increase, or even maintain yield from his land. Soil and water loss can be controlled by such measures as the building of contour banks and cropping on the contour, by the construction of protected water-diversion channels, by the practice of strip cropping and stubble mulch farming--creating a protective cover for our precious top soil against erosion by wind and water. Soil fertility can be maintained by planned crop rotation and the continued return to the land of natural and artificial fertilisers. Conservation farming is scientific and commonsense farming. It is profitable farming, but not at the expense of the soil. Under the guidance of local soil conservation authorities, the average farmer, with the tractor and machines he has on his property, can carry out the conservation practices which will ensure the permanency of his land its fertility."
