From Jim Allen: "1963 Scout 80 4x2 with production Walk-Thru conversion, ca. 1962. As soon as the Scout debuted, the marketing team knew a mistake had been made. The Scout had been intended to be a compact pickup. The full length, station-wagonesque Travel-Top was an afterthought. It was soon learned the Travel-Top was the most popular option and buyers were clamoring for a rear seat and a way to access it. That meant removal of the permanently installed bulkhead between the front and rear compartments. By mid-1962, an Interim conversion kit had been developed and a few thousand of those kits were installed on the assembly line or sold to dealers. A production answer was needed and this is the result. For the '63 model year, the bulkhead was removable via bolts, so the Scout could be configured at the factory or later by the owner or dealer. Bucket seats were offered as well as a rear seat. Shown here is a 1963 model year 4x2 Scout with the production Walk-Thru conversion and the production bucket seats." |
