Atlantic-Crossing Airplanes

Navy seaplanes NC-1 and (in the foreground) NC-3 at Trepassay Bay, the jumping off point for the first attempt to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Not in the picture is NC-4, the only plane from this three-plane effort that successfully reached Europe. The naval vessel in the picture was one of a fleet of ships stationed along the route to provide navigational support. |

Flying off course both NC-1 and NC-3 went down off in the Azores, the interim stop enroute to Portugal. The NC-1 crew was rescued by a passing freighter. The NC-3 was unable to take off from the ocean, but it did sail safely to the Azores. |
