Mrs. Alexander Mitchell
Cabinet card of a full-length studio portrait of Mrs. Alexander Mitchell standing in front of a painted backdrop. She is wearing a floor-length dark-colored dress, leather gloves and a bonnet tied under her chin with a wide ribbon. She is resting her arm on a claw footed stand on which is draped a furred coat or cape. Martha (Reed) Mitchell (1818-1902) was born in Westford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Seth Reed. The family moved to Milwaukee in 1836 or 1837. She married Alexander Mitchell (1817-1887, bn. Scotland) in 1841. Alexander moved to Milwaukee in 1839, and eventually became a millionaire from his banking and railroad concerns, specifically the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. He also served two terms as a US Representative from 1870 to 1874. Mrs. Mitchell was one of the founders of the Milwaukee Museum of Fine Arts in 1882 and the Woman's Club of Wisconsin in 1876. She was also an influential member of the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association from 1858 until her death. After Alexander's death, she split her time between New York state and Jacksonville, Florida. |
