Helen Farnsworth Mears

Portrait of Oshkosh native Helen Farnsworth Mears, age 20, at the time of the unveiling of her sculpture, "Genius of Wisconsin," on display at the southwest entrance of the Wisconsin State Capitol. Mears offered three different designs for the statue surmounting the Capitol dome before the commission finally awarded the contract to Daniel Chester French. Shortly after her death, a group of Wisconsin women purchased Mear's "Genius of Wisconsin," which was placed in the Capitol. |
