The original caption states: "a happy 'Young Columbus IV' took off from Madison's Truax Field bound for the Old World. George Byrne, 15, Brooklyn (Wisconsin), won the  eight day flying trip to Paris and London for selling 201 newspaper subscriptions in his home town. George is a newspaper carrier for The Wisconsin State Journal. George is shown at the airport with his family, from left to right: Mr. Cletus Bryne, his father, George, his 10-year-old sister, Patricia, his brother, Michael, 5, and Mrs. Byrne. The contest which George won is sponsored by Madison Newspapers,  Parade magazine and Trans World Airlines (TWA)."
