Surveying Fire Damage in the Third Wisconsin State Capitol

The remains of a second floor corridor in the North Wing of the Third Wisconsin State Capitol after the fire of February 27-28, 1904. This photograph documents the damage near the Rotunda. Judge John Winslow recalled that the fire stopped short of the octagonal towers in the hallway, so that the portion of the newer portion of the North Wing escaped damage. The upper stairway led from the third floor to the attic over the Senate and Assembly where a sprinkler system had been installed during the Schofield administration. Through human error, the University reservoir that fed the sprinklers was drained shortly before the fire. Although they are charred in this image, this photograph provides the best extant documentation of the original door framing in the Third Capitol. |
