Wisconsin State Capitol (Third) Demolition
The dismantling of the dome of the third Wisconsin State Capitol began with the removal of the 32-foot flagpole. The eagle at the top of the pole was an 1889 replacement for the original eagle. The dome was taken apart and the pieces stored behind Bascom Hall for reconstruction on that University of Wisconsin building. When that idea was rejected the dome was sold for scrap. Lew Porter, superintendent of construction for the fourth Capitol, rescued the 1889 eagle for the Bascom Hall proposal. It is now on public display in the Historical Society's Headquarters building. |
