Orville Wright flew the plane for the U.S. Army test, while Wilbur sailed to Europe at about the same time to conduct a similar demonstration for the French. Orville clearly proved the success of their invention, but the test ended abruptly when the Flyer crashed, killing its passenger, Lt. Thomas Selfridge, and seriously injuring Orville. As a result, the conclusion of the military test was postponed to 1909. It was only after 1908 tests that the general public, both in the United States and in Europe, knew of and accepted the Wright Brothers' claims. |
