Beavers Insurance Company Building

The Beavers Insurance Building at the corner of Monona Avenue (currently Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard) and Doty Street. It was built in 1921-1922 and designed by local architects, Law, Law and Potter. The Beavers were a fraternal benefit society and, at the time, probably the largest of Madison's home-based insurance companies. The next building to the left is the Orpheum Theatre. On the top of the Orpheum sign it reads, "Vaudeville." The State Capitol appears in the distance on the left. Many automobiles are parked on both sides of Monona Avenue and on the inner curb of the Square. Some construction debris appears along the curb on the right. |

Donated by the Oregon Area Historical Society, from the Florice Paulson Estate. The Beavers' Reserve Fund Fraternity was established in Stoughton, Wisconsin in 1902. In 1912, the organization changed its name to Beavers National Mutual Benefit. In 1931, they dropped "Beavers" from the name and simply became National Mutual Benefit, the name they still go by today. See Image ID: 100357 for the groundbreaking for the Orpheum Theater. |
