Waukesha's Primitive Airfield

A barnstorming pilot and curious onlookers at a field on the outskirts of Waukesha that served as a primitive airport. Technically, the term barnstorming should be applied to the flying of the 1920s, while the flying of the pre-World War I flying is properly referred to as exhibition flying. The term "barnstormer" refers to the pilots who took to the air after World War I in cheap, surplus military planes. In rural areas, barnstormers often landed by necessity in farm fields, attracting local attention by flying low. Barnstormers made their living by giving rides to the locals and performing acrobatic stunts. |
