Dragging In the Field

Dragging In the Field | Drawing | Wisconsin Historical Society
An elevated view of a man on a tractor harrowing a field on a hillside. A road and field run along the left side and a small field and trees appear on the right. A fence runs along the field in the background, and there is one tree on the left. Blue sky fills the horizon.<p>The following is a recollection from the creator: "Dragging in the Field. Some of the fields had been plowed during the fall before the snows came. The soft, moist soil in these fields was ready for tilling. The other fields needed to be plowed and disked, and corn stalks and oat stubble had to be turned. At the beginning of preparing the fields, the soil often turned to mud, sticking to the cleats on the huge rear tires of the tractor and dropping off in the driveway as the tractor was driven back from the field. Gradually the land dried in the warm sun, and dust would rise as the fields were worked. Ralph and I would hurry home from school each afternoon to complete the dragging and disking of the fields. Looking over the hood of the green Oliver tractor as I pulled the drag from one end of the field to the other, I would feel small against the long horizon. I sang at the top of my voice as I steered the wheel with the palm of my hand, turning to begin another round."
