Ice Skating at Dunham School
A group of six children play on a frozen pond on the right. The Dunham School and trees appear inside a fence on the left, and the ground is covered with snow. The school has a bell tower and door. More trees and buildings are along the horizon. The following is a recollection by the creator: "Ice Skating at Dunham School. One cold and dark March afternoon, we were skating on the pond beyond the fence in the field of the Duesterbeck farm. Suddenly I yelled across the ice to Bob, who was making a turn on the other side of the pond: “Bob loves Pearl!” This immediately caught Bob’s attention. He skated toward me at a fast clip and threw me down on the ice. My leg broke sharply in two places. Carefully tended by my mother, I spent the next six weeks at home on the sofa. On dark winter days for years to come, my aching leg reminded me of Bob and Pearl and the love I attributed to them." |
