An autographed quarter-length portrait of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur seated on an airplane near a window. He is wearing his uniform with a jacket and hat. Handwritten across the lower right corner is "To Robert Doyle, From his home town friend, Douglas MacArthur." On 18 April 1942, MacArthur was appointed Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA). He was promoted to General of the Army shortly before the end of 1944. In a letter, dated March, 14th, 1945, MacArthur awarded Robert Doyle the "Asiatic-Pacific Service Ribbon in view of your long and meritorious service in the Southwest Pacific Area with the forces of this command. You have added luster to the difficult, dangerous and arduous profession of War Correspondent."

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This image was published in the Milwaukee Journal on March 1st, 1944. The image and article appear on page 124 of the clipping book, Anybody Here From Wisconsin?, a reprint of the scrapbook kept by Robert Doyle's mother. Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan.

On the back of the original print is written: "When referring to this photograph, mention the following number: GHQ SWPA - 43 - L-929."
