Marine Cemetery at Tarawa
Memorial plaque and white crosses at a Marine cemetery on Tarawa Atoll in the South Pacific. Text on the plaque reads, "Semper Fidelis. At this site memorial services were held on December [1?], 1943 for the 1,026 valiant officers and men of the Second United States Marine Division who fell during the capture of this Atoll. Protestant, Catholic and Jewish Services were read. Also buried in this cemetery are officers and men of the Navy, Army and Marine Corps who subsequently died in line of duty during United States occupation of Tarawa. Some crosses are erected here in memory of the officers and men whose graves are marked by memorial monuments elsewhere on this island." Buildings are in the background. |

Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan. |
