Names, (left to right) are Switchman Private First Class Kenneth Walters of St. Paul, Minnesota and Yard Conductor Sergeant John Welch of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Back home, Private First Class Walters was a switchman for the Northern Pacific. Robert Doyle wrote a caption for this image although it was not published at that time, "This may not be the 'Old 97', but the French locomotive is sufficiently wrecked to qualify it for the song. Damage was done at railroad yards in Normandy bombed by Allies before invasion. In the cab are (names above), members of railway operating battalion. Welch was a Milwaukee Road conductor before entering service."
