About the Event
Moccasin crafting is an important part of many Indigenous cultural traditions—and now, you can learn the art of Ashinaabe moccasin crafting firsthand. Join Biskakone Greg Johnson, proud member of the Lac du Flambeau band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, as he leads an up-close, two-daymoccasin sewing workshop in collaboration with the Madeline Island Museum.
A cultural practitioner and Indigenous educator, Biskakone teaches traditional Ojibwe practices, including crafts, tool working and, of course, moccasin making. In his pursuit of honoring and respecting Ashinaabe culture, he has also mastered the arts of cedar bark mat weaving, beadwork, winnowing basket construction, canoe building and winter bark basket making. Biskakone dedicates time not spent on crafting and educating to other traditional practices, including hunting, spear fishing, plant and herb gathering and more—all in service of raising awareness about and advocating for stronger Indigenous treaty rights.
