Photography was in its infancy and the Civil War had just concluded when a handful of photographers captured the public’s attention – and dollars – by claiming to photograph ghostly spirits in their images. Learn the history of photography, see wet-plate photography demonstrated up close and grasp the secrets behind spirit photography in this fascinating afternoon in the H.H. Bennett photography gallery and studio. You will understand how these photographers managed to fool so many people, long before the arrival of photo editing apps. You will even have an opportunity to pose for your own spirit photograph, taken by H.H. Bennett staff. A digital version of the photo is included with your ticket; the actual tintype is available for an additional fee. Light refreshments will be served.

Bennett Studio & Museum documents the history of the Wisconsin Dells and the life of H.H. Bennett, a Civil War soldier, photographer, and inventor whose stunning landscape photographs helped showcase the beauty of the Wisconsin Dells and the Driftless Area, attracting some of the first tourists.
