Lathrop, Stephen Pearl 1816 - 1854
scientist, physician, professor, b. Shelburne, Vt. He was educated at Middlebury College (BA., 1839, and M.A.), and the Medical College of Vermont at Wood-stock (M.D., 1843). After several years as a teacher at Middlebury College and as assistant geologist for the state of Vermont, he became the first professor of chemistry and natural history at Beloit College in 1849. In 1854 he became the first occupant of a similar chair at the Univ. of Wisconsin, but died before completing his first year. Through his teaching, speaking, and writing in the field of scientific agriculture, he exerted a real influence among Wisconsin farmers. Trans. Wis. Acad. Sci 41: 95-116 (1952).
