lawyer, judge, b. Chenango County, N.Y. He was the brother of James H. Knowlton (q.v.). He moved to Janesville in 1837, resided for a short time at Mineral Point, and in 1840 was admitted to the bar. In 1843 he settled in Prairie du Chien, where he practiced law, served in the territorial council (1844-1846), and was captain of volunteers at Fort Crawford during the Mexican War. He was circuit judge of the newly created 6th judicial circuit (1850-1856), and in this capacity served as ex officio judge of the state supreme court until its separate organization in 1853. After leaving the circuit court bench, he continued his law practice in Prairie du Chien, and later moved to Menekaune, Oconto County, where he died. Colls. State Hist. Soc. Wis., 5 (1868); J. R.
