pioneer ship builder, b. Lorain, Ohio. He moved to Milwaukee from Buffalo, N.Y., in 1848, and in 1852 built his first ship in Milwaukee, the schooner "D. Newhall." Eventually locating his shipyard on Jones Island in Milwaukee, he produced 24 ships between 1852 and 1857. In 1861 his business failed financially and, although he was able to pay his indebtedness, he was unsuccessful in attempts to form a new company. In 1864 he moved to Detroit, Mich., where he engaged in ship-building and worked as a shipping broker until his death. Milwaukee Sentinel, June 21, 1898; Milwaukee Journal, June 21, 1898; J. S.
