lumberman, b. Weston, Ontario, Canada. He entered the lumber business in the 1860's at Muscatine, Iowa, and subsequently became a partner of Frederick Weyerhaeuser (q.v.) and his associates in the powerful Mississippi River Logging Co. He was secretary of this company (1871-1909), and in 1900 helped found the Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. With Alexander B. McDonell he operated the lumber firm of McDonell and Irvine at Chippewa Falls (1880-1894). With the depletion of Wisconsin's timber resources, Irvine began to move his lumber interests westward. In 1898 he moved to St. Paul, Minn., where in 1899 he founded the timber firm of Thomas Irvine and Son. He lived in St. Paul until his death. J. G. Gregory, ed., W. Central Wis.
