Ingersoll, Chalmers 1838 - 1908
newspaperman, politician, b. Westfield, N.Y. He learned the printer's trade, moved to Illinois (1856), and during the Civil War served in the 8th Illinois Cavalry. In 1865 he moved to Beloit, and in 1866 established the Beloit Free Press, but sold it in 1869, at which time it was restyled the journal. In 1870 he established a second Free Press, and was publisher and editor or co-editor of this paper (1870-1877, 1882-1907). A Republican, he was influential in state politics, and was sergeant-at-arms of the state senate (1879-1880).
