Hoy, Philo Romayne 1816 - 1892 | Wisconsin Historical Society

physician, naturalist, b. Mansfield, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio Medical School, Cincinnati (1841), and from 1841 to 1846 practiced in New Haven, Ohio. In 1846 he moved to Wisconsin, settling in Racine where he practiced medicine until his death. He devoted much of his spare time to a study of the bird life in the Racine area, and, stimulated by his friendship with Increase A. Lapham (q.v.), began a collection of bird specimens that eventually became one of the largest local collections in the U.S. He was one of the founders of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters (1870), and was for three years its president. He was a member of the state board of fish commissioners (1874-1878), and belonged to many professional and scientific organizations. He was the author of numerous articles on the flora and fauna of Wisconsin. Trans. Wis. Acad.
