popular composer, music publisher, b. Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He moved with his parents to Michigan in 1866, and to Wisconsin in 1879, settling in Milwaukee. In 1891 he established a music- publishing firm in Milwaukee, which became successful in 1892 with the widespread popularity of Harris' "After the Ball." With his songs continuing to appeal to the popular taste and his publishing enterprises expanding, Harris moved his business to New York in the early 1900's. There he continued his song-writing successes and wrote numerous movie scenarios based on his musical themes. He was the author of an autobiography, After the Ball, Forty Years of Melody (1926).
