Lutheran clergyman, professor, theologian, historian, b. Frankentrost, Saginaw County, Mich. He attended Concordia College, Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, but because of ill health did not graduate. He was professor of history at Northwestern College, Watertown, Wis. (1875- 1878), and at the Wisconsin synod's theological seminary in Milwaukee (1878-1887). He was ordained in the Lutheran clergy in Milwaukee, and in 1887 became professor of church history at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. He held this position until his death. He was the author of numerous works on theology and church history, and is probably best known for his Geschichte der Lutherischen Kirche in America, Erster Theil (1892).
