Catholic priest, Civil War chaplain, b. near Linz, Austria. He migrated to Wisconsin in 1847 and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1850. He was serving as pastor at Port Washington when the Civil War broke out, and in Sept., 1862, was appointed chaplain of the 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, his services being of special value to the many soldiers who spoke German. He was mustered out in July, 1863, but re-enlisted a year later to succeed Father Napoleon Mignault as chaplain of the 17th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (1864-1865).
