A geographic name meaning "far end of the lake" in French, and used for three very different places by early writers: 1, a city at the southern end of Lake Winnebago that still retains the name; 2, a river at the western end of Lake Superior now called St. Louis River; and 3, the western end of Lake Superior where the modern cities of Duluth and Superior are located. In all three cases, the location was the furthest point on a lake from the spot where French travelers normally entered.
