musician, b. near Franklin, New London County, Conn. He graduated from Oberlin College (1865), and spent several years studying in Europe. He was professor of music at Oberlin (1867-1868). In 1868 he moved to Wisconsin to serve as professor of music at Ripon College (1868-1878), and from 1878 to 1884 held a similar position at the Milwaukee College for Women. He was a founder of the Milwaukee Music School (1884), and was its director until 1895, when he accepted a position at Pomona College, Claremont, Calif. One of the country's leading music theorists, he was the author of books on composition and pianoforte study, including History of Pianoforte Music (1883) and New Lessons in Harmony (1885).
