botanist, professor, b. Ware, Mass. He specialized in taxonomic botany and graduated from Harvard Univ. (B.S., 1922; M.A., 1923; Ph.D., 1925). He was appointed to the Univ. of Wisconsin faculty (1925), became full professor (1937), and continued in this capacity until his death. He was curator of the university herbarium, and was chairman of the botany department (1948-1949). One of the founders of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, he was secretary-treasurer (1936-1944) and president (1953-1954). He was the author of numerous articles and several books, including Spring Flora of Wisconsin and Manual of Aquatic Plants. Who's Who in Amer., 27 (1952); Madison Wis.
