Farrar, Charles Samuel 1826 - 1903
educator, b. Pepperell, Mass. He attended Lawrence Academy (Groton, Mass.) and Amherst College, and graduated from Dartmouth College (M.A., 1850). He studied law for two years, and was principal of Gilmanton Academy, N.H. (1852-1855). He was professor of mathematics and chemistry at Elmira Female College, N.Y. (1856-1863) and professor of chemistry and physics at Vassar (1863-1874). In 1874 he moved to Milwaukee, where he served as principal of Milwaukee College (1874-1889). He invested his own funds in the college, donated his large private collection to the college library, and organized a women's art and science class. His interest in public art lectures and discouragement over the lack of an endowment led to his resignation in 1889, and he moved to Evanston, Ill. G. N.
