Dartford [origin of place name]
(modern Green Lake, in Green Lake Co.) Named for a Mr. Anson Dart, the first settler. The post office was established as Dartford in Marquette Co. in 1847. It was located in Green Lake County when that county was set off from Marquette in 1858. The post office name didn't change its name to Green Lake, however, until 1907.
Description from John W. Hunt's 1853 Wisconsin Gazetteer: "DARTFORD, P. V., in town of Brooklyn, the seat of justice of Marquette county, is located on the outlet of Green Lake, in the openings on section 21, towna 16 N., of range 13 E.; 65 miles northeast from Madison. It contains about 400 temperate and industrious inhabitants. It is on the stage route from Milwaukee to Berlin and Plover, as also on the great western thoroughfare from Shleboygan and Fond du Lac. The climate of this vicinity is very healthy. It has 58 dwellings, 5 stores, 1 hotel, 4 mills, 5 mechanical shops, 1 church, and 3 organ ized religious denominations."
