lumberman, banker, b. New Brunswick. His family moved to Calais, Me., when he was five years old. From early youth he engaged in the logging business. In 1862 he moved to Williamsport, Pa., where, in partnership with his brother, he entered all phases of lumbering operations and participated in banking activities. In 1889 he moved to Wisconsin as one of the purchasers of the Superior Lumber Co. of Ashland, and became its president and manager. The company, renamed the Keystone Lumber Co., merged with the Edw. Hines Lumber Co. of Chicago in 1902; in the reorganization, Cochran became a director of the Hines Co. After 1902 he invested heavily in timberlands on the Pacific coast and in Mexico.
