politician, Congressman, b. Leyden, N.Y. He moved to Beaver Dam with his father in 1845. He attended Madison Univ. (now Colgate) at Hamilton, N.Y., and engaged in the wool- manufacturing business in Beaver Dam. During the Civil War he served with the Union army, at first in the Missouri militia, later as assistant quartermaster of U.S. Volunteers, and was mustered out with the rank of major. In 1865 he returned to his business in Beaver Dam. A Democrat, he was state senator (1870-1871, 1873-1874), and in 1874 was elected to Congress and served one term (1875-1877). After leaving Congress, he farmed near Beaver Dam and later moved to Greenwood, Tex. Biog. Dir. Amer. Cong. (1950); Wis. Legis. Manual (1876).
