Since 1893, the United States Postal Service has issued stamps commemorating significant people, issues and events. In 1945, in preparation for the Wisconsin State Centennial, Wisconsin made a request to the United States Post Office Department for a commemorative stamp. In November of 1947 the Milwaukee Philatelic Society announced a Centennial Stamp Contest. Artists needed to be residents of Wisconsin, and designs were to be appropriate for the centennial celebration. Artists chose to illustrate typical activities of Wisconsinites such as dairy cows, lumbering or logging, farm buildings, industrial buildings and the Wisconsin State Capitol. This gallery contains a selection of just under 30 stamp designs created for the Centennial Stamp Contest and a few related photographs.
