Chapter 12 asks students to think through the reasons why people began working to protect historic places and the environment. It encourages students to think about their own heritage and introduces them to the concepts of conservancy, historic preservation, restoration and stewardship.

This chapter also serves as a review of Wisconsin history themes and eras woven throughout the textbook.
