Information about Tribal Historic Preservation Officers in Wisconsin | Wisconsin Historical Society

Learn when you need to submit project materials to the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) for Section 106 review and the contact information for Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.

When to Submit Project Materials to the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO)

  • If your project will occur solely within the reservation boundaries of a Native American Nation or Tribe that has formal Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) status, then you must submit the project materials directly to the THPO for the Section 106 review. The Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) does not have review or other consultation authority in these cases.
  • If your project is located within the reservation boundaries of a Native American Nation or Tribe and also outside the reservation boundaries, then you must submit project materials to both the THPO and the SHPO for review.

For more information about Tribal Historic Preservation Officers, please see the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation and the National Park Service.
