Historic Homes Tax Credit Program
State Historic Preservation Office, Wisconsin Historical Society
The Historic Homes Tax Credit Program offers a 25 percent Wisconsin income tax credit for homeowners who rehabilitate historic, non-income-producing personal residences, and who apply for and receive project approval before beginning physical work on their projects. The Wisconsin Historical Society's State Historic Preservation Office administers this program.
To qualify for the program, before beginning any work, your personal residence must be one of the following:
- Listed in the National Register or State Register of Historic Places
- Contributing to a National Register or State Register historic district
- Be determined through the Historic Homes Tax Credit Program application process to be eligible for an individual listing in the State Register of Historic Places
A homeowner must spend at least $10,000 on the following types of eligible work within a two-year period:
- Exterior of the house, such as roof replacement and painting, but not site work such as driveways and landscaping
- Interior of a window sash (if work is done to the exterior of the window sash)
- Structural elements of a historic property, such as reinforcing structural beams
- Heating and ventilating systems, such as furnaces, air conditioning and water heaters
- Electrical wiring or plumbing systems, but not electrical or plumbing fixtures
Note: If you cannot meet the $10,000 minimum investment requirement within the two-year period, when you apply, you may request a five-year expenditure period.
