Camp Randall Sketch, 1864

The 40th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Randall in Madison and mustered into service on June 14, 1864.

From Madison the regiment moved to Memphis, Tennessee,between June 14-19, 1864. Its service included garrison, railroad guard and picket duty around Memphis, as well as participating in the repulse of the Confederate attack on Memphis on August 21, 1864.

On September 16, 1864, the regiment mustered out. It lost 19 men during service. One officer and 18 enlisted men all died from disease.
