The 44th Wisconsin Infantry was organized by companies at Camp Randall in Madison and mustered into service during October-November 1864.

Companies were ordered to Nashville, Tennessee, as quickly as possible. Companies A-D and F reached Nashville during October and November, and the entire regiment was complete by February 1865.

It served in Tennessee and Kentucky, participating in the Battle of Nashville and providing garrison and guard duty at Nashville and Paducah, Kentucky. The regiment mustered out on August 28, 1865. It lost 58 men during service. One officer and 57 enlisted men died from disease.
