Lithuanians were first classified separately from Russians in U.S. immigration records in 1899, when as estimated 275,000 resided in the U.S. The greatest numbers arrived after 1900 as many Lithuanians sought to escape Russian persecution. By 1914, Wisconsin was home to 4,045 Lithuanians, most of whom settled in Sheboygan. "Little Lithuanians" were also established at Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, and Three Lakes before WWII.  Lithuanians also immigrated en masse after WWII under the Displaced Persons Acts, joining, for the most part, existing Lithuanian communities.
